Designing and Building our Japandi-Inspired No Grout Family Bathroom
In this post we share about designing and building our main bathroom at The Good Day House. Inspired by the minimalist elegance of Japandi style, we've created a space that blends Scandinavian simplicity with Japanese zen.. think dayspa at home! Japandi design emphasises clean lines, natural materials, and a sense of tranquillity, making it the perfect choice for our family bathroom.
As lovers of good design and sustainable living, crafting a beautiful and functional bathroom for our family was a top priority. Shoutout to our Builder Sherrif Constructions for working with us to create a layout that works perfectly for our sized family.

We made sure to prioritise comfort and privacy by insulating all the bathroom walls with Earthwool Sound Shield Insulation. Acoutic insulation not only helps regulate the temperature but also ensures a peaceful oasis where we can unwind without disturbances.

When it came to bringing our bathroom vision to life, we had an incredible experience shopping for all our bathroom items at the Geelong Tiles and Bathware showroom. With the guidance of Melinda, our knowledgeable consultant, we navigated through their impressive selection of fixtures, fittings, and finishes. It was here that we discovered the fun things like our beautiful raw brushed brass tapware and peach concrete basinâĶalongside the necessities like our toilet and bathtub. The consultant understood our style and helped us curate a cohesive look that aligned with our design inspiration. Shopping locally ensured that we were guided through the process from start to finish.
For the floors, we opted for burnished concrete throughout the house, which not only adds an earthy elegance but also aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainable materials. The shower floor is a standout feature, inset into the concrete floor and crafted from timber slats made of celerytop pine, stained and sealed with a Fiddes Stain in Whisky.
The wet area walls are coated in micro cement, expertly applied by Surfedge Rendering. Microcement is a versatile and durable material that offers a seamless, modern finish. Seeing the transformation unfolding as our vision came to life was fascinating. Now living in the space, I can confidently say that my favourite feature of micro cement is that I never have to clean grout again!
To complement the overall feel of our home, we lined the walls with Tasmanian Oak solid timber boards sourced from Britton Timbers. The custom-made timber vanity and matching mirror, both handcrafted by Al also made from Tasmanian Oak. The vanity, sealed with Fiddes Hardwax Oil for a durable and natural finish, features three spacious drawers equipped with undermount soft-close drawer runners by Hafele. The vanity is practical, functional and beautiful. The matching mirror, also crafted from Tasmanian Oak, ties the whole look together, reflecting our passion for craftsmanship and attention to detail. It's these personalised touches that truly make our bathroom feel like home.
Our choice of tapware, shower fittings, and bath fixtures was a deliberate one. We selected Faucet Strommen's Pegassi collection in the Raw Brushed Brass which will petina beautifully over time. Faucet Strommen is proudly Australian-made and designed and is available to view and order through Geelong Tiles and Bathware.
The basin is a stunning peach-coloured concrete design by Nood Co, another Australian designed and made company. We opted for a small basin with an inbuilt soap shelf.
Our large inset bath is spacious enough for two adults, we strategically centred the tap in the middle to allow for us to comfortably sit in there together and opted for a 150mm faucet (tap) which means ther is plenty of space for the kids to play without the fear of hitting their heads.
To complete the look, we've styled the bathroom with Sage x Clare homewares, adding pops of colour and personality. The result is a great family-sized bathroom that's both functional and beautiful.
Designing and building our main bathroom was an incredible journey, filled with creativity and passion. It's a space that reflects who we are as a family â embracing good design, sustainability, and the joy of everyday living. Stay tuned for more insights into our DIY adventures and home projects. Until next time!
